Spirit is in fact the perfect unity of all Elements, and more. The Spirit is everything, everything can be regarded as a manifestation of the Spirit. In order to understand the nature of the Element of Spirit, consider the most well known ancient oriental symbol, that of the Yin and the Yang.
The Yin-Yang symbol is shaped like a circle, which in almost all cultures represents wholeness , and the infinite . The Element of Spirit is itself the manifestation of wholeness, and infinity.The two halves of the symbol tell us, that the Spirit, and the Universe has an essential dual nature. Everything has two sides to it, and the opposites have no meaning without each other. We can only define and understand the existence of the color white, if there is
also black – this works the other way around, too. The opposites give life to each other, and cause the Universe to be a dynamic place. If we light a candle, the light casts shadow. The appearance of light instantly creates its opposite, the shadow. There is no Shadow without Light, there is no Light without Shadow. Neither Shadow, nor Light are either „good” or „bad”. Light is essential to life as we know it, but if there is too much of it, it creates famine and death. Shadow balances Light out, but if there is too much Shadow, it causes death as well.
In nature, there is no Good or Bad. There are only opposites in natural pairs, of which both are needed for wholeness. The terms of good and bad are subjective ideals, and their meaning depend on certain people and cultures. We as Witches, recognize these opposite principles of nature all around us, and we respect them, because they are the basis of all existence. The oldest of these opposites is the Male and Female Principles, which we of old times call the God and the Goddess. The God and the Goddess are the two main manifestations of the Spirit, that are opposite in nature, and make each other whole: just like the Light and Shadow are the two manifestations of the Flame. We were all born from the love of the God and the Goddess, everything exists because of them.
